📖 Psalm 15 — “Who May Dwell in Your Sanctuary?”
🗝️ Key Verse:
“O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?” — Psalm 15:1
📜 Context and Background
Psalm 15 is a wisdom psalm written by David. It serves as a liturgical question-and-answer format—essentially asking: “Who is fit to be in the presence of God?”
In the time of ancient Israel, the “tent” refers to the tabernacle—God’s dwelling place. The “holy hill” refers to Mount Zion, the location of God's sanctuary. While it begins with a question about physical nearness, its real thrust is spiritual: What kind of person truly abides in God’s presence?
Psalm 15 acts like a mirror—revealing the character of those who walk in fellowship with God. It doesn’t focus on ritual or ceremony but on righteous conduct, truthful speech, and moral integrity.
🔹 I. The Fundamental Question (v.1)
“O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?”
-
David is not asking who can visit God occasionally, but who can abide — dwell permanently, live intimately in God’s presence.
-
“Sojourn” — as a guest under God’s roof.
-
“Dwell” — the deeper, lasting presence in communion with God.
🙏 This is not just about worship location but spiritual qualification.
It’s a question of relationship, not religion. Who can walk closely with God? The answer is not about sacrifices or titles — it’s about how one lives.
🔹 II. The Godly Person’s Character (vv.2–5a)
David answers his own question by outlining ten traits of the person who may dwell with God. These are not works to earn salvation but evidence of a heart aligned with God.
a. Personal Integrity (v.2a)
“He who walks blamelessly and does what is right…”
-
Blameless doesn’t mean sinless, but wholehearted, sincere.
-
The blameless walk reflects consistency in public and private life.
b. Truthfulness (v.2b)
“…and speaks truth in his heart.”
-
Not just honest speech, but truth that begins within.
-
No double life, no hidden lies — heart and mouth align with truth.
c. No Slander or Harmful Speech (v.3a)
“Who does not slander with his tongue…”
-
The righteous person avoids gossip, tearing down, and character assassination.
-
Words matter — and what we say reveals what we believe.
d. Kindness to Neighbors (v.3b)
“…and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend.”
-
This includes not participating in betrayal, shaming, or harm — especially toward those close to us.
e. Moral Discernment (v.4a)
“In whose eyes a vile person is despised, but who honors those who fear the Lord…”
-
The righteous don’t celebrate evil or honor the influential just because they’re powerful.
-
Instead, they respect and esteem those who walk in reverence of God — regardless of their status.
💡 The company you honor reveals the values you carry.
f. Covenant-Keeping (v.4b)
“Who swears to his own hurt and does not change.”
-
This person keeps their word even when it becomes inconvenient or costly.
-
Their commitments are not based on comfort but conviction.
g. Financial Integrity (v.5a)
“Who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent.”
-
In ancient Israel, charging interest to fellow Israelites was forbidden (Exodus 22:25).
-
The righteous do not exploit the needy or pervert justice for financial gain.
⚖️ True worship is seen in how we handle wealth and power.
🔹 III. The Promise of Stability (v.5b)
“He who does these things shall never be moved.”
-
This is a declaration of security and stability in God.
-
The one who lives with integrity and righteousness will not be shaken — spiritually, morally, or eternally.
🌳 Like a tree planted by streams of water (Psalm 1), the godly remain rooted even when storms come.
🌿 Devotional Reflections
-
Do I long to dwell with God, or just visit Him occasionally?
-
Is my walk consistent with my talk?
-
Do I treat others — especially the weak — with fairness and respect?
-
Do I honor those who fear the Lord, or am I swayed by cultural popularity?
-
Do I keep my word, even when it costs me?
🙏 Prayer
Lord, make me the kind of person who lives in Your presence.
Create in me integrity, truthfulness, and love for justice.
Help me honor what is holy and stand firm when the world shifts.
May I dwell not just near You but in You — unshaken, faithful, and joyful. Amen.
