Do Not Fret Because of Evildoers - Psalm 37

📖 Psalm 37 — “Do Not Fret Because of Evildoers”

🗝️ Key Verse:

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4

📜 Background and Context

Psalm 37 is a wisdom psalm, written by David in his old age (v.25 suggests reflection from a lifetime of experience). It’s an alphabetic acrostic in Hebrew, structured as a series of proverbs or couplets centered on a core message:

Don't envy the wicked — trust in the Lord.

It speaks to those troubled by the apparent success of evildoers, and it assures them that:

  • Their power is temporary,

  • Their success is shallow,

  • And God’s justice is certain.

This is not a lament or a plea — it’s a mentor’s calm instruction.

🔹 I. Trust God, Don’t Envy the Wicked (vv.1–7)

“Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!” (v.1)

  • “Fret” (Hebrew: charah) implies burning with anger or anxiety.

  • David warns: Don’t let evil steal your peace.

“They will soon fade like the grass…” (v.2)

  • Their prosperity is temporary and fragile.

“Trust in the Lord, and do good…” (v.3)

  • The right response isn’t fear — it’s faith and faithfulness.

  • “Dwell… befriend faithfulness” — cultivate quiet obedience.

“Delight yourself in the Lord…” (v.4)

  • Not in outcomes, not in comfort — in the Lord.

  • “He will give you the desires of your heart” — when you delight in Him, your desires become aligned with His.

“Commit your way to the Lord…” (v.5)

  • Literally, “roll your way onto the Lord” — hand over your plans, burdens, and future.

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him…” (v.7)

  • Stillness is not passivity — it’s trust in action.

  • Let go of the need to control outcomes.

🕊️ Peace doesn’t come from understanding the wicked — it comes from entrusting yourself to the Righteous Judge.

🔹 II. The Fate of the Wicked vs. The Future of the Righteous (vv.8–22)

David returns repeatedly to contrasts:

“Refrain from anger… it tends only to evil.” (v.8)

  • Anger at injustice can easily lead to resentment or revenge.

“For the evildoers shall be cut off…” (v.9)

  • “Cut off” is the repeated theme — their end is certain.

“But the meek shall inherit the land…” (v.11)

  • Jesus quotes this in Matthew 5:5 — a call to humble, trusting endurance.

“The wicked plots… but the Lord laughs…” (vv.12–13)

  • God isn’t threatened — their day is coming.

“Better is the little that the righteous has…” (v.16)

  • A life of contentment in God is richer than the abundance of the wicked.

“The Lord knows the days of the blameless…” (v.18)

  • He knows your path — and your inheritance is forever.

📉 The wicked may flourish like grass — but they will fade.
🌱 The righteous may seem overlooked — but they will endure and inherit.

🔹 III. God Upholds the Righteous (vv.23–31)

“The steps of a man are established by the Lord…” (v.23)

  • God directs and delights in the path of His people.

“Though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong…” (v.24)

  • God’s hand holds him up — failure is not final when you belong to the Lord.

“I have been young, and now am old…” (v.25)

  • David’s testimony: he’s never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging.

“He is ever lending generously…” (v.26)

  • The righteous are generous, not because they’re rich, but because they trust in God’s provision.

“The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.” (v.31)

  • Scripture isn’t just in his mind — it’s written on his heart, guiding his walk.

🦶 To walk steadily in a shaking world, hide God’s Word in your heart and let Him order your steps.

🔹 IV. Wait and Inherit — Endure and See Justice (vv.32–40)

“Wait for the Lord and keep his way…” (v.34)

  • This is the refrain of the wise: keep walking, keep trusting.

“I have seen a wicked, ruthless man… spreading like a green laurel tree. But he passed away…” (vv.35–36)

  • External success is not a sign of God’s favor — it can vanish in a moment.

“Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for there is a future…” (v.37)

  • Keep your eyes not on the headlines, but on those who live quietly with God — they have a future.

“The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord…” (v.39)

  • When trouble comes, the righteous don’t look to themselves — they run to their refuge.

🛡️ The righteous aren’t untouched by trouble — but they are upheld by God in it, and saved from it.

🧭 Application Points

  1. Don’t envy those who succeed without God — their gain is fleeting.

  2. Delight in the Lord — and your heart will align with His purposes.

  3. Wait patiently — God's justice is perfect, even if it seems slow.

  4. Keep doing good — even when others do wrong.

  5. Remember your future — you are not forgotten; your inheritance is secure.

🙏 Prayer

Lord, when I see evil prosper and righteousness suffer, help me not to fret. Teach me to trust You, to delight in You, and to walk in Your ways. May I not envy the wicked, but remain faithful and still before You. I believe You hold my future, and You are my refuge in trouble. Strengthen my heart to wait, trust, and rejoice in Your justice. Amen.
