๐ Psalm 62 — “Rest in God Alone”
๐️ Key Verse:
"Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him." — Psalm 62:1 (NIV)
๐ Background and Context
Psalm 62 is a declaration of quiet trust in God in the midst of threats, betrayal, and instability. It is attributed to David, possibly written during a time when enemies plotted against him, including times of rebellion, such as Absalom’s uprising.
It’s a wisdom psalm with strong personal resolve, yet with a tone that invites public reflection and instruction. Repeated refrains emphasize waiting, stillness, and placing one's trust solely in God — not in people, power, or possessions.
๐น I. Confidence in the Only Source of Rest (vv. 1–2)
"Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him."
"Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken."
-
“Rest” (or silence/stillness) implies a soul at peace, untroubled by chaos around.
-
David makes no mention of circumstances — his calm is rooted in God alone.
-
Three metaphors: Rock, Salvation, Fortress — all speak of strength and stability.
-
David declares not just faith in God, but exclusive faith in God. No backup plans.
๐ง♂️ True rest isn’t found in resolution, but in reliance.
๐น II. The Danger of Trusting People (vv. 3–4)
"How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down—this leaning wall, this tottering fence?"
"Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies."
-
David describes himself as a wounded man, barely standing — like a leaning wall.
-
His enemies pretend to bless him, but plot his fall behind the scenes.
-
The lesson here: People can be unstable, untrustworthy, and deceitful — even those once close.
⚠️ Don’t lean on what can lean against you.
๐น III. Repeating the Truth Until It Sinks In (vv. 5–7)
"Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him."
"Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken."
-
David preaches to his own soul, repeating truths from verses 1–2 — but now more resolved.
-
He reminds himself that his value, identity, and strength come only from God.
-
This repetition shows how trust is not a one-time decision, but a daily discipline.
๐ชจ What you repeat becomes your refuge.
๐น IV. An Invitation to Trust (v. 8)
"Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge."
-
David turns outward: from personal testimony to public invitation.
-
“At all times” — good or bad, visible or silent seasons.
-
“Pour out your hearts” — bring your raw emotions, unfiltered prayers, and quiet fears.
๐งก God doesn’t want polished prayers; He wants poured-out hearts.
๐น V. False Sources of Security (vv. 9–10)
"Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie..."
"Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them."
-
Both the powerless and powerful are unstable — all are “a breath.”
-
Money, power, and manipulation offer false control.
-
David warns us not to attach our identity to fleeting things, even if they seem secure.
๐ธ What you love can end up owning you.
๐น VI. The Character of God (vv. 11–12)
"One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: 'Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love.'"
-
God alone holds two attributes in perfect balance:
-
Power — He is able.
-
Steadfast love — He is good.
-
-
He judges all deeds — not to crush, but because He cares.
๐ก️ God is strong enough to protect you, and kind enough to want to.
๐งญ Application Points
-
Preach to yourself daily. Trust isn’t automatic; repeat what is true.
-
Don’t put your weight on what can’t carry you. People and possessions are breath, not foundation.
-
Pour, don’t polish. Let God hear your honest heart.
-
Measure your peace not by circumstance, but by where your hope rests.
-
Worship the God who is both powerful and loving. That combination is rare — and safe.
๐ Prayer
Father, when I feel anxious, remind me to return to silence before You. Teach my heart to rest in You alone — not in people’s opinions, not in money, not in worldly success. Be my rock, my fortress, my only salvation. I pour out my heart to You, because I know You are strong enough to handle it and loving enough to hold it. Amen.
