Not to Us, But to Your Name Be the Glory
📖 Background
Psalm 115 is a powerful contrast between the living God and lifeless idols. It was likely sung during worship in Israel as a reminder that all glory belongs to God alone.
The surrounding nations mocked God's people because they could not physically see their God. In response, the psalmist declares that the Lord is not absent - He reigns from heaven and does whatever pleases Him.
This psalm calls believers to reject self-glory and trust fully in the God who is alive, active, and faithful.
🔑 Key Verse
“Not to us, Lord, not to us but to Your name be the glory, because of Your love and faithfulness.”
- Psalm 115:1
🙏 1. The Heart of True Worship (v.1)
The psalm begins with one of the most beautiful declarations in Scripture:
“Not to us, Lord, not to us...”
Human nature craves recognition, praise, and credit. Yet the psalmist redirects all honor to God.
Why?
Because of His:
- steadfast love ❤️
- faithfulness 🕊️
Every blessing, victory, and achievement ultimately points back to Him.
✨ The safest place for glory is in God's hands, not ours.
👑 2. The Living God Reigns (vv. 2-3)
The nations ask:
“Where is their God?”
The answer is immediate:
“Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him.”
God does not need to prove His existence by visible displays. He rules with absolute sovereignty.
While people judge by sight, faith rests in God's unseen authority.
🌿 God's silence is not His absence, and His invisibility is not His weakness.
🪙 3. The Folly of Idolatry (vv. 4-8)
The psalmist describes idols:
- mouths that cannot speak 👄
- eyes that cannot see 👀
- ears that cannot hear 👂
- feet that cannot walk 👣
These idols appear impressive but possess no life.
Then comes a sobering warning:
“Those who make them will be like them.”
We become like what we worship.
If we worship dead things, our hearts grow spiritually dull.
If we worship the living God, our hearts become alive.
💡 What captures your devotion will eventually shape your character.
🛡️ 4. Trust in the Lord (vv. 9-11)
Three groups are called to trust God:
- Israel 🇮🇱
- the house of Aaron ⛪
- all who fear the Lord 🙌
And each time the same promise is repeated:
“He is their help and shield.”
The repetition emphasizes certainty.
God is not merely a helper.
He is your helper.
God is not merely a shield.
He is your shield.
🕊️ Faith grows when God's promises become personal.
🌾 5. The God Who Remembers (vv. 12-15)
“The Lord remembers us and will bless us.”
What a comforting statement.
People may forget.
The world may overlook.
But God remembers.
The blessing extends to:
- great and small
- young and old
- families and future generations
🌱 God's memory is filled with mercy, and His blessings reach farther than we can see.
🌍 6. The Purpose of Life (vv. 16-18)
The heavens belong to the Lord, but He has entrusted the earth to humanity.
The psalm concludes with a commitment:
“It is we who extol the Lord, both now and forevermore.”
As long as we have breath, we have a reason to praise.
Every day becomes an opportunity to give glory where it belongs.
🎶 The purpose of life is not to make our name known, but to make His name known.
✨ Reflection
Psalm 115 reminds us that life is not centered on us.
The world tells us to build our platform, protect our reputation, and seek our glory.
The psalm points us in a different direction:
“Not to us, Lord, but to Your name be the glory.”
When God receives the glory, we find freedom from the exhausting burden of self-promotion.
🙏 Application
- Give God credit for every blessing and success.
- Examine the things that compete for your devotion.
- Trust God even when you cannot see what He is doing.
- Make God's glory the goal of your life.
✍️ Author's Quote
“The moment we stop living for our name, we discover the joy of living for His.”
